Vaginal reconstruction or hymenoplasty is the repair of damaged or weakened vaginal tissue. This procedure repairs, or enhances bladder, bowel, and sexual function. This operation also normalizes the appearance of external genitalia.

Dr. Tahery, a urogynecologist, has more than 20 years of experience in surgical restoration of the vaginal defects and cosmesis. Dr Tahery has had great success using the patient’s own tissue in these repairs without the need for mesh or other synthetic material.

What is hymen and where is it?

Hymen or otherwise known as the virginity tissue is a band of tissue at the opening of the vagina usually torn with intercourse or with any type of manipulation. Hymen can be very thick in some women causing pain with intercourse and difficult to tear. In others, it may be very thin and easily torn.

What is Hymenoplasty or Hymen Repair and hymenal excision?

Hymenoplasty which can also be referred to as Hymen Repair or Hymenorrhaphy is a surgical procedure that restores a torn hymen. A Hymen is a thin membrane that partially closes the vaginal opening and can be easily torn during exercise, sexual intercourse or through the use of tampons.

Sometimes hymenal tissue remains thick and creates an obstruction to the outflow of blood or penetration of the vagina. It can also become hypersensitive and cause pain with touch. Excision of this tissue aims to restore the normal sensation in the vaginal opening and resolve pain.

Who is a candidate for Hymenoplasty?

Any woman with the desire to repair a torn hymen is a good candidate for this procedure. Many women choose to have this procedure due to religious or cultural reasons. This procedure can be performed under local or general anesthesia.

Excision of the hymenal ring is recommended for women with pain during penetration or manipulation of the vaginal opening and fail conservative management.

When should I expect to recover?

You can go back to work within 1 to 2 days and full recovery usually takes place in 4 to 6 weeks.

How long is the hymen repair surgery?

Hymenoplasty or excision is a fairly quick procedure that usually takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Does Hymenoplasty or excision tighten the vagina?

Hymenoplasty does not tighten the vagina, it removes or restores a thin membrane at the vaginal opening.

What are the risks of Hymenoplasty surgery?

Just like all types of surgery, there are risks involved with Hymenoplasty.  Infection swelling and bleeding are some of the risks associated with Hymenoplasty even though very rare. As a Board certified OB/GYN and Urogynecologist, Dr Tahery has special protocols in place to prevent any complications during and after the Hymenoplasty procedure.
