Repair and Revitalize With Vaginal Rejuvenation

Vaginal rejuvenation in popular culture is a term used to describe the process of repair and revitalization of the internal and the external genitalia. This includes surgical and medical restoration of the vaginal and pelvic floor injuries sustained during a vaginal delivery. It also includes cosmetic tightening of the vaginal tissue and changing the appearance of the external genitalia, for example vulvar reduction and shortening the clitoral hood. There are also procedures that enhance sexual pleasure and sensation that fall under this term.

The primary culprit in pelvic floor and vaginal tissue damage is vaginal delivery. Laboring woman pushes the baby’s head into the pelvic floor and stretches the muscles, nerves, connective tissue, of the vagina and the surrounding structures, such as the bladder and rectum. Prolonged pushing, difficult operative vaginal delivery requiring forceps or suction cup, and the mother’s genetic predisposition to pelvic injury, results in sustained injury that presents in the post partum period as prolapse, gaping of the vaginal opening or decreased vaginal tightness.

Vulvar elongation, discoloration, clitoral hood drooping and enlargement, and shortening of the distance between the rectum and the vagina as a result of tearing of the vaginal opening may also be an aftereffect of a vaginal delivery. These changes can cause irritation, increase chance of bladder and vaginal infection, as well as disruption of sexual gratification, and cause for decreased sexual self esteem.

As a Pelvic Surgeon and Uro-Gynecologist, Dr. Tahery offers all the non-surgical and minimally invasive surgical options available to treat and rejuvenate the effected organs. We use pelvic floor muscle exercises and pelvic floor therapy, hormonal treatment, as well as rejuvenating procedures to address each affected organ and tissue.

Definitions of Some of the Most Common Procedures:

  • Cystocele Repair

Cystocele repair is the reattachment of the bladder and the upper vaginal wall to the appropriate suspending structures in the pelvic floor. Women with this condition complain of a protruding bulge, incontinence, or difficulty emptying the bladder.

  • Rectocele Repair

Rectocele repair is the repair of the muscular and connective tissue layers in the posterior wall of the vagina separating the rectum and the vagina. Women with this condition complain of pain with intercourse, protruding bulge and difficulty emptying their bowels.

  • Perineoplasty

Perineoplasty is the repair of the gaping vaginal opening created during a vaginal delivery and not adequately repaired. In this procedure the connective tissue between the anus and the vagina is repaired and the vaginal opening is restored or rejuvenated. Women with this condition complain of loss of tightness and control of the muscles in the vagina.

  • Labiaplasty and Clitoral Hood Reduction

Labiaplasty and clitoral hood reduction, is the surgical reduction and remodeling of the inner vulvar tissue or the clitoral hood. This procedure is usually performed to reduce physical discomfort as well as alter the appearance of the external genitalia. Hymen repair is to meticulously re-attach the hymen remnants and recreate the virginal state. This procedure is highly coveted in some cultures that require virginity as a pre-requisite to marriage.

  • Uterine Prolapse

During labor, tearing and stretching of the uterine support structures causes the uterus to prolapse or fall into and at times be seen through the vaginal opening.

  • Vaginal Prolapse

Vaginal prolapse is tearing of the attachments of the vagina after a hysterectomy and prolapse of the apex of the vagina through the vaginal opening.

  • Cosmetic Vaginal Tightening

At times there is no damage to the pelvic organs but the tissue feels sagging and support is lacking. Many options are available to rejuvenate and return function to this organ.
