Designer vagina is a term used to refer to a procedure or a combination of procedures that aim to improve the aesthetic and function of the genitalia and areas round it. Designer vagina surgery has become a popular option among women seeking to address aesthetic concerns or discomfort caused by childbirth, aging, hormonal issues, or injury. It is commonly used to correct loose tissue or changes in elasticity that impact sexual health and self-confidence.

WHAT IS A DESIGNER VAGINA?

A “designer vagina” can be achieved using a variety of surgical and noninvasive procedures. Designer vagina surgery broadly refers to any vaginal rejuvenation procedure performed on the vagina or vulva. Depending on the patient’s goals, a designer vagina surgery can either be performed as a single procedure or include several different treatments targeting different areas of concern.

Labiaplasty

A labiaplasty is a procedure that can minimize the size and shape of the labia minora (inner lips). It is commonly used to correct enlarged or asymmetrical labia that are causing discomfort. Labiaplasty is typically an outpatient procedure performed with general or local anesthesia. When the goal is to enlarge the labia majora (outer lips) instead, filler is injected to “plump” the labia.

Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is a reconstructive surgical procedure that is often performed to correct injury from childbirth or complications related to pelvic-floor dysfunction. The procedure can restore sexual function and correct vaginal laxity. Vaginoplasty is an inpatient procedure requiring a hospital recovery.

Patients seeking a nonsurgical alternative to traditional vaginoplasty can select a minimally invasive option that utilizes radio frequency (RF) to generate thermal energy. Designed to improve issues with vaginal laxity, a nonsurgical vaginoplasty does not require anesthesia or downtime.

Vaginal Rejuvenation

Vaginal rejuvenation can refer to a suite of surgical and nonsurgical procedures for addressing vaginal appearance, decreased sexual sensation, vaginal laxity, and more. Along with labiaplasty, the following procedures are often included with vaginal rejuvenation:

 • Perineoplasty: This is a surgical procedure that tightens and repairs the perineum to correct muscle weakness, sexual dysfunction, discomfort after childbirth, or trauma.

 • Laser therapy: Noninvasive laser therapy is commonly used to treat vaginal dryness and atrophy. Lasers stimulate the self-healing mechanisms of vaginal tissue, promote collagen production, and improve elasticity.

 • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment: PRP promotes tissue healing, blood flow, and cellular regeneration using plasma taken from a patient’s own blood. It is commonly used to address vaginal atrophy, urinary incontinence, and sexual dysfunction.

Clitoral Hood Reduction

This cosmetic surgery removes excess tissue from the folds covering the clitoris to extend clitoral exposure. In addition to improving appearance, clitoral hood surgery can also enhance sensitivity and pleasure.

BENEFITS

Designer vagina surgery can offer benefits for many different circumstances. While most commonly used to address dysfunction, trauma, or aesthetic change caused by childbirth or aging, designer vagina surgery can be used at any age to treat vaginal asymmetry, discomfort, or reduced sexual sensitivity.

Youthful Appearance

As time goes on, hormonal changes can “thin out” the appearance of the vagina. Surgery and laser treatments can help to revive the appearance of the vagina by restoring volume or making certain aspects more pronounced. Additionally, designer vagina surgery is commonly used by women who want to bounce back confidently after volume loss or other changes following pregnancy and childbirth.

Improved Function

In many cases, designer vagina surgery is the only way to truly address sexual dysfunction caused by scarring or issues with the pelvic floor. By tightening vaginal muscles and support structures, surgery can help to address urinary incontinence and boost bladder control.

Enhanced Sexual Satisfaction

Changes that occur with the vagina because of age or childbirth can diminish sexual satisfaction because of everything from feelings of being self-conscious to discomfort during sex. Many procedures involved with designer vagina surgery actually enhance tissue sensitivity to create more satisfying experiences.

RECOVERY AND RESULTS

Both recovery and results can vary widely based on the procedures chosen to reach your goals for aesthetics and function. In general, laser and injectable treatments are all performed in the office as outpatient procedures. Topical pain relief is provided at the treatment site. Downtime is practically nonexistent.

Most surgical procedures are outpatient, and recovery may last several weeks. While surgical results are immediate, options that include lasers and PRP can sometimes take several weeks to produce full results because they rely on rebuilding your body’s own collagen production to change the appearance and function of vaginal tissue.

Labia are folds of skin surrounding the vaginal opening that come in different sizes and shapes. With age, pregnancy, and hormonal changes, the labia can also change size and shape, leading to loss of fullness. While some women simply have thinner labia naturally, others experience change and it can lead to low self-esteem issues. It’s possible to get a plump labia with several minimally invasive treatments such as labia puffing that add volume to the outer lips (labia majora) of the vagina.

WHY PLUMP THE LABIA?

Getting a plump or full labia Is generally a matter of personal preference. Some women are unhappy with changes that don’t make them feel like themselves. Others want plump labia after a lifetime of dissatisfaction. For better results, always talk to your doctor about your reasons for wanting this procedure. The most common reasons for wanting a plump labia are regaining a youthful appearance, concerns about the sudden loss of labia volume, the saggy appearance of the vagina, and labia being asymmetrical.

Youthful Appearance

Like the rest of the soft tissue throughout the body, labia can lose the plumpness and suppleness that we associate with vitality and youthfulness. For many, visual changes to the labia simply represent unwanted signs of aging.

Loss of Labia Volume

As fleshy folds, labia protect the vagina. They also contribute to sexual stimulation and lubrication. Thinning labia could cause irritation and discomfort.

Saggy Appearance

It can be jarring to discover that your formerly puffed labia now appear deflated or stretched. As estrogen and collagen levels dip with age, the labia can undergo noticeable sagging.

Asymmetrical Labia

There’s no “right” size or shape for labia. While minor asymmetry of the inner and outer lips of the vagina is relatively common, noticeable differences in size, shape, or position from one side to the other can make you feel self-conscious. If one side of the labia is severely inflated, this is known as labial hypertrophy. In many cases, asymmetry or enlargement on one side of the labia has been present since birth. However, most women only notice asymmetry when the labia increase in size during puberty.

In addition to creating cosmetic concerns, labia asymmetry can cause irritation or pain when wearing underwear or snug-fitting pants if one side of the labia is much larger. Some women also experience discomfort when riding bikes, horseback riding, exercising, or engaging in sexual activity.

LABIA PLUMPING CANDIDATES

Anyone who is unsatisfied with the appearance of their labia or simply desires plump labia is a candidate. However, most don’t even consider the procedure until they notice changes at key points in life. Most women will consider labia plumping during an after menopause, after giving birth, and when they see noticeable signs of aging.

During and After Menopause

Decreasing estrogen levels that occur both leading up to and after menopause can turn formerly plump labia saggy. During menopause, estrogen decline causes some degree of vaginal atrophy for most women. When this occurs, the labia thin out and lose elasticity. In addition to shrinking, the lips can also appear loose or wrinkled.

After Giving Birth

Pregnancy hormones and the birthing process can both dramatically change the appearance of the labia. It’s common to experience stretching and loosening of the labia minora (inner lips) or labia majora (outer lips) following childbirth. Additionally, tearing or an episiotomy during labor can lead to scarring and visual changes to the labia.

Aging Women

With age, hormonal changes and decreased blood flow to the labia can create dramatic changes. The most common complaints are labia thinning and reduced fullness. Meanwhile, the body’s natural slowdown in collagen production after age 30 can make the labia lose firmness and begin to wrinkle. In some cases, the inner folds of the labia may actually begin to atrophy to further reduce volume and definition of the outer vaginal lips.

WHAT IS A LABIA FILLER?

Like the injectables that are used to volumize and plump the face, labia filler or vaginal filler is a treatment that plumps and rejuvenates the labia. This cosmetic procedure adds fullness and improves the symmetry of the labia majora (outer lips). Patients enjoy enhanced aesthetic appeal and improved body confidence. For more dramatic and longer-lasting results, some patients prefer fat transfers to the labia.

Hyaluronic Acid Filler

This is the most common option for achieving plump labia. During treatment, a dermal filler made with hyaluronic acid (HA) is injected into the labia majora. People who’ve had facial fillers will recognize that HA is the same ingredient used in many name-brand fillers. HA is a gel-like substance that boosts volume and fills in wrinkles while also triggering the body’s own natural collagen production. Prior to injection, anesthetia is applied to the outer labia. Next, labia filler injections are made in strategic areas of the labia using a fine needle. No downtime is needed. Results from labia filler typically last 6 to 12 months.

Silicone Fillers

Silicone fillers are no longer recommended for labia puffing due to potential risks and complications.

Fat Grafting Labia Filler

A labia fat transfer volumizes the labia by borrowing your own fat cells from other parts of your body. Benefits include a more natural feel and lower risk of allergic reaction and rejection. Fat grafting also offers results that can last for years. Fat grafting to plump labia is more invasive than using injectable labia filler. Fat cells are extracted from the thigh, buttocks, or other area of the body using liposuction. Following extraction, fat cells are injected into the labia.

]]>
Vaginal rejuvenation is quickly becoming one of the most popular segments of cosmetic and reconstructive surgery in Los Angeles and around the world. It’s not hard to see why. Millions of women face issues that affect their confidence and quality of life. Changes to the internal and external genitalia are more common than most realize.

Women can sustain injuries after childbirth, experience hormone-related changes throughout their life, and more. These problems can negatively impact one’s quality of life, resulting in low self-esteem. Furthermore, these issues can cause additional problems like discomfort during sexual intercourse or urinary incontinence.

Vaginal rejuvenation aims to address those concerns through repair and revitalization. While there are many surgical options available, surgery is not always necessary. There are several non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation treatments to provide life-changing results without the stress or downtime.

Types of Non-Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation

Contrary to popular belief, women don’t have to go under the knife to see impressive results. Every woman’s needs are different, and it’s important to turn to an experienced urogynecologist like Dr. Michael Tahery for guidance in determining which non-surgical treatment is right for you. The good news is that there are multiple non-invasive options.

Non-Surgical Vaginal Tightening

Vaginal tightening is an often-requested procedure. Many women experience looseness of the vaginal tissue after giving birth. Those going through menopause may also notice thinner, dryer, and less elastic tissue due to hormonal changes.

Fortunately, non-surgical rejuvenation is available to address concerns. Rather than physically removing extra tissue to achieve a tightening effect, non-surgical tightening relies on your body’s natural revitalization capabilities. Lasers and radiofrequency modalities can direct gentle thermal energy deep into the vaginal tissue, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. Over time, the tissue tightens naturally, all without a single incision.

Non-Surgical Labiaplasty

Women looking to reshape or resize the labia minora and labia majora often consider labiaplasty. Surgical labiaplasty is highly effective at enhancing the overall appearance of the labia and addressing issues like discomfort. However, it can take several weeks to recover fully from the procedure. Non-surgical labiaplasty offers a non-invasive alternative with no incisions.

Non-surgical labiaplasty utilizes radiofrequency technology. Handheld devices apply gentle heat to activate fibroblasts within vaginal tissue. The fibroblast cells produce collagen proteins. Through radiofrequency stimulation, this form of non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation effectively shrinks and tightens tissue for a smoother and more uniform look.

Benefits of Non-Surgical Vaginal Rejuvenation

Despite the effectiveness of surgery, more and more women are turning to non-surgical rejuvenation. Opting for the non-surgical route can provide many benefits catering to your unique needs and concerns.

Faster Recovery

One of the biggest perks of non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation is the speedy recovery. Generally, non-surgical procedures occur in an outpatient setting. That means they don’t require downtime; most women will return to work the next day.

Because there are no incisions, the recovery process is much more manageable. While every procedure is different, there are generally fewer restrictions to worry about when recovering from non-invasive treatments.

Enhances Sexual Pleasure and Confidence

Every woman has their reasons for seeking vaginal rejuvenation, but enhanced sensation during sexual intercourse is a significant motivator. Non-surgical procedures can provide transformative results. Improvements to the vaginal tissue often result in more tightness, improving sexual pleasure.

Additionally, the improvements women experience can be life-changing. Vaginal concerns often cause self-esteem to plummet. Many become self-conscious and less confident. Non-surgical rejuvenation is an investment in yourself. It can help you take control of your sexual health, making you feel more empowered than ever before.

Treatments are Faster

Traditionally, surgical procedures require significant planning on your end. Most patients must take time off work and plan their life around recovery. That’s not the case with non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation.

The lack of incisions and reliance on laser and radiofrequency technology make these procedures much quicker. They’re outpatient procedures, so you can go home and return to your routine almost immediately.

Depending on the procedure, women often see results within a few days and continuous long-term improvements in the months after.

Improves Vaginal Dryness

Vaginal dryness is a common but often-overlooked problem. It can affect women of all ages, but it’s a common byproduct of menopause that can make intercourse painful. While non-surgical vaginal rejuvenation often focuses on the physical appearance and elasticity of vaginal tissue, it can also address dryness.

Stimulating collagen production improves tissue in many ways. In addition to becoming thicker and firmer, collagen can encourage more natural lubrication.

There are many ways to address your vaginal concerns. Whether you’re considering surgery or want to stick with non-surgical alternatives, you can turn to Dr. Michael Tahery. As an expert in cosmetic vaginal surgery and urogynecology, Dr. Tahery is well-equipped to find a solution to your unique needs. With genital cosmetic surgeries growing increasingly popular, many women are uncovering the benefits of vaginal rejuvenation surgery. Though an uncomfortable topic for some, a healthy vagina is important to sexual function, self esteem, and correct functioning bladder and bowels. Pursuing this procedure can be driven by personal desire for a different appearance of the internal and external vagina (view images), sexual discomfort, and bladder and bowel functions.

Vaginal Looseness

In addition to being uncomfortable, vaginal laxity is also anatomically unsettling. Many women experience tears and laxity during vaginal delivery. This is also known as looseness of the vagina. With the vaginal canal widening a considerable amount while in labor, the vagina usually does not return to its pre-childbirth state. Most women notice the vaginal looseness during sex, with exercise, and pressure in the pelvic area with standing up.

As a uro-gynecologist, Dr Tahery specializes in identifying damages to the vaginal structure and repairing them. Dr. Tahery has designed outpatient procedures to restore vaginal appearance and function under local anesthesia, that are minimally invasive with minimal down time.

Stress Incontinence

Described as the unintentional loss of urine, stress incontinence involves leaking urine in response to sometimes even minimal physical activity. Laughing, sneezing, and coughing are prime examples. Not only urine loss and odor can be embarrassing, but it prevents women from being physically and sexually active in fear of urine loss. Vaginal rejuvenation procedures have proven wildly effective in remedying this issue. Dr Tahery designs individual treatment plans that are well tolerated, minimally invasive, and effective.

Bloated, Gas, Constipation, and, Hemorrhoids

One of the most common complaints in women is abdomen bloating, gas, constipation, and hemorrhoids. Weakness in the wall between the vagina and rectum results in entrapment of stool. Inability to empty the stool results in gas, abdominal bloating, pressure in the rectum and vagina, and hemorrhoids. This is also called “outlet obstruction”. Identifying and repairing the weakness in most cases can resolve these most bothersome issues.

Dry Vaginal Tissue

One of the most common physical changes in perimenopause and menopause is vaginal dryness. Vaginal rejuvenation surgery is touted as an effective treatment for this symptom of menopause. Vaginal dryness can make it difficult and painful to have sex, and it can also make women more susceptible to infection. Laser and radiofrequency vaginal rejuvenation procedures are effective in treating dryness, increasing the blood flow to the vagina, and restoring natural lubrication.

Have you decided that it’s time for some rejuvenation? Vaginal rejuvenation is a restorative, confidence-boosting procedure that allows patients to address both physical discomfort and aesthetic concerns. Consisting of a collection of surgical and nonsurgical options, vaginal rejuvenation is a broad term that refers to any procedure that alters vaginal appearance or anatomy. While childbirth and menopause are the two biggest causes for interest in vaginal rejuvenation procedures, this is something that can enhance the quality of life for women at all stages of life with concerns about their sexual health and wellness.

There are many different reasons for seeking vaginal rejuvenation. In some cases, patients simply seek to enhance the appearance of the labia, clitoris, or vaginal opening. Other patients are motivated by desires to treat incontinence, improve vaginal tightness, strengthen weak vaginal/pelvic muscles, correct painful intercourse, or increase lubrication. What’s the next step if you’ve decided that it’s time to consider vaginal rejuvenation? One of the first questions you might have has to do with vaginal rejuvenation cost. Take a look at the factors that might influence vaginal rejuvenation cost in Los Angeles.

DOES INSURANCE COVER VAGINAL REJUVENATION?

Vaginal rejuvenation cost is generally not covered by most insurance plans. The reason for the lack of coverage is because vaginal rejuvenation is categorized as a cosmetic procedure. As a result, your insurer is likely to consider this to be an elective procedure that is not “medically necessary.” However, exceptions exist. Your insurance may cover vaginal rejuvenation if you’re correcting childbirth injuries or trauma. It’s always worth reviewing your plan with Dr. Tahery to determine if any part of your procedure can be covered by insurance.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE COST OF VAGINAL REJUVENATION

A number of factors go into vaginal rejuvenation cost in Los Angeles. It’s nearly impossible to get a “generic” estimate when searching online for this very reason. The best way to get an accurate estimate of what you can expect to pay is to book a consultation. However, the following vaginal rejuvenation cost factors are universal.

Number of Sessions Required

While surgical vaginal rejuvenation options typically only require one treatment, some nonsurgical rejuvenation therapies may require several sessions. Factors that influence how many sessions are needed include the severity of the issue, a patient’s level of laxity, and a patient’s desired results. A plan for the number of sessions needed to achieve a specific goal will be created prior to starting treatment.

Type of Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedure

Vaginal rejuvenation can look very different from patient to patient. While one patient may only require a single procedure, another may find that pairing procedures is a good strategy for getting the best results. The most common procedures included in vaginal rejuvenation are labiaplasty, vaginal tightening, clitoral hood reduction, genital bleaching, labia puffing, hymenoplasty, and vaginoplasty. Each procedure results in a different vaginal rejuvenation cost based on its complexity, the need for anesthesia, and more. When you speak with a doctor about your options, you’ll discuss complementary procedures that can help to produce more dramatic, longer-lasting results.

RELATED: Frequently Asked Questions About Labia Majora Puffing

Hospital or Surgical Center

In general, procedures performed as an outpatient in a surgical center are less costly than in a hospital. Dr. Tahery has designed surgical centers that are fully certified to perform cosmetic and gynecological procedures which significantly reduce the cost to patients.

General Anesthesia vs. Local

Dr. Tahery is an expert in performing cosmetic and gynecological procedures under local anesthesia. This eliminates the cost and risk of general anesthesia and helps with faster recovery and shorter downtime.

The Patient’s Individual Circumstances

You don’t need to be reminded that your body is unique. That’s why your vaginal rejuvenation will be a unique procedure that is tailored to meet your needs. The personalization of each procedure and technique used will ultimately adjust your vaginal rejuvenation cost. In fact, the cost for the same procedure is often different between two patients.

RELATED: Recovery After Labiaplasty Surgery

The Patient’s Goals

What do you want to achieve with vaginal rejuvenation? This question is always the priority when creating a treatment plan. Generally, patients aiming for more dramatic results will pay more for their procedures. The complexity of the procedure(s) chosen to help you meet your goals will also determine costs. Surgical options are typically more expensive than nonsurgical laser options.

If you’d like to get a personalized assessment for vaginal rejuvenation cost in Los Angeles, it’s time to move forward with Dr. Michael Tahery of L.A. Women’s Health & Wellness. A board-certified OB/GYN and urogynecologist specializing in women’s health needs in Southern California, Dr. Tahery has decades of experience performing vaginal rejuvenation procedures. Vaginal rejuvenation is an umbrella term used to describe several unique procedures. The vagina is a complex organ and will continue to change through puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. As you age, the vagina can experience several issues.

Investing in a vaginal rejuvenation procedure is a fantastic way to address those unwanted changes, reclaim your sexual health, and boost your self-confidence. But there’s one question you need to ask:

Which vaginal rejuvenation procedure is for you?

Here are a few common issues and the solutions Dr. Tahery can provide to solve them.

Uncomfortable or Insecure in Certain Clothing?

Many women experience discomfort wearing tight-fitting clothing due to the shape and size of the labia. Excess tissue can be a point of insecurity. Depending on the extent of the issue, the tissue might protrude. In some cases, women experience labial hypertrophy, creating noticeable asymmetry, discomfort during sex, and various other problems.

If that’s something you’re dealing with, labiaplasty might be for you. This vaginal rejuvenation procedure reshapes and reduces the vaginal lips. There are many approaches to labiaplasty. Dr. Tahery can perform several techniques, including laser labiaplasty, to address your unique needs.

Labiaplasty can be a life-changing procedure that addresses discomfort, improves the look of specific types of clothing, and significantly improves your self-confidence.

Does It Feel “Loose” Down There?

The vagina is an incredibly resilient part of your body. But major life events, such as childbirth, and aging can make it lose its elasticity. While there are many myths and misconceptions about vaginal looseness, it’s most often a result of medical issues. Trauma from a vaginal birth, pelvic floor conditions, and menopause are all common causes of that loose feeling.

Luckily, vaginal tightening is an available solution. It’s a reconstructive vaginal rejuvenation procedure that addresses stretched tissue and weak pelvic floor muscles. The exact surgical techniques used will vary based on your needs. After a thorough examination, Dr. Tahery will develop the right approach to experience improved aesthetics, better sexual sensation, reduced dryness, and more.

RELATED: Facts and Myths About Loose Vagina

Damaged Area Between the Vagina and Anus?

Vaginal childbirth can be a beautiful thing. But for many women, it can cause severe damage and discomfort. Obstetric tears are a common injury women face during childbirth.

When the vagina is overstretched during delivery, the result can be a partial or complete perineal tear. The perineum is the area between the anus and vaginal opening. While it looks simple, the perineum contains vital muscles and connective tissues that support the vagina.

Tears can cause vaginal looseness, frequent infections, discharge, unwanted pressure, bowel issues, and other related issues.

Dr. Tahery can perform a perineoplasty to address a torn perineum. This vaginal rejuvenation procedure repairs the muscles and tissue, resulting in better aesthetics and improved function.

Looser and Thinner Labia Majora?

If you’re experiencing thin vaginal lips, you’re not alone. Hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause can cause the labia majora, or outer lips of the vulva, to become thin and loose.

Aesthetically, thin outer lips can cause the labia minora, or inner lips, to be more visible. It also causes laxity issues and sagging tissue.

Thinner lips reduce the cushioning effect of the lips, leading to pain during intercourse. Even physical activities like riding a bike, or horse, and sex can become a pain.

Labia puffing is an easy solution to these problems. The procedure engorges the tissue using injectable fillers or fat grafts. It’s a simple vaginal Rejuvenation procedure that can provide a more youthful appearance and more comfort.

Torn Hymen?

The hymen is a thin membrane that surrounds the vaginal opening. The hymen is another sorely misunderstood part of the vagina. The tissue can vary in thickness and sensitivity. For some women, it’s thin and easily torn with light manipulation. But for others, it’s thick enough to remain intact even with penetrative intercourse.

Whatever the case, there are several reasons you might want to undergo a hymenoplasty. This procedure restores the hymen, addressing cultural, religious, or psychological needs.

Hyperpigmentation of Intimate Areas?

Are you dealing with hyperpigmentation and darker skin around the vagina or anus? Pigmentation is relatively common in intimate areas. Melanin and pigment-producing melanocytes can accumulate due to hormonal changes. Friction and scars from skin issues can cause noticeable color variation, too.

While not a medical issue, darkened skin can make many women self-conscious. If you fall into that category, genital bleaching might be for you.

This vaginal rejuvenation procedure uses topical treatments, chemical peels, or lasers to lighten the skin. With multiple lightening sessions, you can achieve a more attractive pink flesh tone and even pigmentation in intimate areas.

Those are just a handful of rejuvenating procedures that can transform your vagina. Whether you’re looking to achieve a more youthful appearance, address pain, or achieve better sexual gratification, these solutions can make it happen.

Reach out to the offices of Dr. Michael Tahery to learn more. Dr. Tahery has over two decades of experience performing these procedures and more. He’s ready to discuss your needs and help determine which vaginal rejuvenation procedure suits you. Call to schedule a consultation today!

Thanks to the growing popularity of vaginal rejuvenation services, more and more women are turning to procedures like clitoral hood reduction surgery to reclaim their sexual health and confidence. Also known as a Hoodectomy, this procedure can address several concerns. Its main goal is to reduce excess tissue, ultimately improving the form and function of the clitoris as a whole.

What is the Clitoral Hood?

The clitoral hood is a section of skin located at the top of the vulva. It forms the peak of the labia minora, resulting in a protective hood-like shape. As the name would imply, these tissue folds cover the clitoris to shield its tip and shaft.

The clitoris is home to over 15,000 nerve endings. The hood prevents irritation and excessive stimulation during daily life. When the clitoris engorges during sexual arousal, it moves the tissue aside for direct stimulation.

Like other parts of the vagina, the exact size and shape of the clitoral hood are different from woman to woman. There is no “normal” but rather a wide range of aesthetic appearances.

Who is a Candidate for Clitoral Hood Reduction?

Clitoral hood reduction surgery aims to alter the physical appearance of the tissue covering the clitoris. Despite its importance in protecting the clitoris, the hood can present issues during sexual intercourse.

Ideal candidates for this procedure are women who experience decreased sensation due to excess tissue around the clitoral hood. Extra skin can prevent full retraction during intercourse, resulting in a lack of proper stimulation and inability to climax.

Women who are unhappy with the aesthetics of the clitoral hood can benefit from this procedure as well. Many women choose to pair clitoral hood reduction with a labiaplasty, which focuses on the size and shape of the vaginal lips. Because the clitoral hood is an extension of the labia minora, surgeons can improve the overall look of the vulva through these two procedures.

Women of all ages can benefit from a clitoral hood reduction surgery.

The Clitoral Hood Reduction Procedure

Clitoral hood reduction surgery is delicate but relatively straightforward. That said, knowing what to expect can help you better understand what this operation entails.

1. Before the Procedure

The Hoodectomy process starts with a detailed consultation. Clitoral hood reduction is a gynecological cosmetic procedure. How your surgeon will proceed depends entirely on your unique needs and desires.

During the consultation, you can speak with your surgeon about the issues you want to address. From there, you will have an examination of your clitoral hood as a component of the whole vulvar/clitoral balance, and develop a course of action. Alternative procedures will be considered and discussed in order to achieve the desired cosmetic goal.

Before your scheduled operation date, Dr. Tahery will provide specific instructions for pre and post-operative care. Generally, they include medications, restrictions in activity, and follow-up.

2. During the Procedure

Clitoral hood reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure that occurs under local anesthesia. Every case is different, and the length of surgery will depend on the level of correction needed.

In most cases, the surgery takes less than an hour to complete. Surgical time may increase if pairing the Hoodectomy with a Labiaplasty.

Local anesthesia is usually sufficient for most women. As a result, the risks of unwanted side effects that come with general anesthesia are non-existent.

Once numb and comfortable, your surgeon will use horizontal incisions to alter the size and projection of the tissue. Exact techniques vary based on aesthetic goals. After removing sufficient tissue, surgeons close the wound with dissolvable sutures and apply bandages for healing.

3. Recovery

Immediate recovery from clitoral hood reduction surgery on average requires a few days. Plan to avoid activities that require pressure on and irritation of the operative area. During this time, reduce daily activities to promote healing and reduce the chances of complications. Take things easy and avoid physical strain.

Dr. Tahery will provide detailed post-op instructions, which go into wound cleaning and general care. Instructions include cleaning, medication, what is normal and not usually expected. Moderate levels of discomfort are standard as well. Dr. Tahery is available for any concerns you may have post-operatively.

Full recovery will require 6 weeks. Avoid rigorous physical contact for at least a month. By the four to six-week mark, you should start to see the final results of the procedure.

Labiaplasty procedures are becoming increasingly popular in the United States and beyond. It’s not hard to see why. This cosmetic surgery can address issues, provide more comfort, and help women regain their sexual confidence.

Despite the more open discussions surrounding women’s sexual health, procedures like labiaplasty still come with many questions. One of the most common concerns regarding labiaplasty is its effects on pregnancy and giving birth. Is it better to get a labiaplasty before or after pregnancy? The right choice for you depends entirely on your needs and goals.

Labiaplasty Before Pregnancy

Interest in labiaplasty timing is reasonable considering how it affects the vagina. Labiaplasty is typically an elective procedure that seeks to correct cosmetic concerns involving the vaginal lips. For most women, it addresses inconsistent sizing, excess skin, and discomfort among other issues.

Vaginal aesthetics is a nuanced topic, so details of the procedure depend entirely on your needs. While mostly about appearance, many women also experience functional benefits like reduced pain during sexual intercourse and more comfort when wearing tight-fitting clothing.

No matter your goals for labiaplasty, there’s no denying that the procedure results in physical changes to the tissue. But does it affect pregnancy?

You’ll be happy to know that labiaplasty doesn’t present any inherent risk for women who want to get pregnant in the future. It does not stop you from conceiving or giving birth.

The vagina is resilient and adaptable. After a surgical procedure like labiaplasty, the essential functions of the vagina remain intact. As a result, it’s perfectly safe to get labiaplasty before pregnancy. In fact, many women can benefit from the procedure.

Cases of labial hypertrophy and enlarged tissue can be painful for many women. The discomfort can lead to issues during intercourse. Pair that with the impact on one’s self-esteem, and aesthetic issues could negatively influence your sexual health.=

In those cases, labiaplasty before pregnancy is worth considering. There’s no simple answer to whether you should wait to start a family or not. However, choosing to get labiaplasty before pregnancy will not affect your ability to conceive or give birth in the future.

Labiaplasty After Pregnancy

Generally, surgeons will encourage women to get labiaplasty after pregnancy. There are a couple of reasons for this.

First, your labia minora and labia majora could change during pregnancy. Every woman’s body responds differently to the biological processes that occur during the miracle of life. However, many experience significant labial growth. It occurs mostly during the final stages of gestation when the body experiences a flood of hormonal changes. While labial swelling can reduce a bit, it can also be permanent.

If you get a labiaplasty before pregnancy, the results could change after giving birth and essentially reverse the work. For this reason alone, many women choose to seek further treatment to address those additional cosmetic changes.

Another benefit of waiting to get labiaplasty after pregnancy is that you can pair it with other surgeries. Vaginal delivery can damage the bladder and the rectal walls in the vagina and can be repaired at the same time as a labiaplasty.

Many women choose to get labiaplasty in conjunction with perineoplasty. Perineoplasty addresses obstetric tears between the vagina and anus. The procedure repairs the tissue to restore anatomy and normal function. Perineoplasty restores the appearance of the opening of the vagina as well as vaginal tightness during intercourse.

In addition to perineoplasty, you can pair labiaplasty with vaginal tightening. Some surgeons can include labiaplasty as part of a more comprehensive “Mommy Makeover” package as well..

The exact timing will vary. However, women usually have to recover three to six months after giving birth before considering a labiaplasty or any other vaginal repair.

There’s no right or wrong choice as to whether you should get labiaplasty after pregnancy or before. The procedure does not affect your ability to get pregnant whatsoever. So if you’re experiencing significant discomfort or self-consciousness, it may benefit you now.

The vagina is one of the most misunderstood parts of a woman’s body. Since the dawn of time, misconceptions and myths have run rampant. There’s no greater source of confusion about the vagina than issues concerning tightness.

The concept of having a loose vagina is one that’s been around for centuries. But the truth is that vaginal elasticity is complex. It’s surprisingly resilient. However, it can change throughout your life due to hormonal fluctuations, major life events, and more.

Here’s the truth about some common myths about a loose vagina.

Vagina Looseness and Sex

Everyone’s heard this myth and all of its associated jokes before. Contrary to popular belief, the vagina doesn’t become loose after having “too much” penetrative sex. No matter how much a woman has sex, the vagina can bounce back. It’s an incredibly elastic organ that adjusts for sexual activity.

Sure, the tissue becomes more relaxed before, during, and after sex. However, this “looseness” is no different than your mouth opening wide to eat or yawn! No matter how many times you stretch your mouth, it always rebounds back to its original shape. The same applies to the vagina.

Another misconception is that the hymen causes the feeling of a tight vagina. Despite the myth of virgins and broken hymens, this thin tissue doesn’t totally cover the vaginal opening. It merely surrounds the opening. After penetrative sex, the hymen can stretch and make the vagina feel more open. However, it doesn’t always tear or impact sensation.

Women with vaginal looseness are likely experiencing other issues. It’s not a product of too much penetrative sex.

The good news is that there are several ways to address tightness concerns. Vaginal tightening encompasses surgical procedures, laser treatments, and more. Tightening can improve elasticity to increase sensation for both partners.

Childbirth Causing Loose Vagina

The female body goes through some extreme changes during pregnancy and after delivery. While many believe that childbirth can loosen a tight vagina, the reality is a little more complicated than that.

The vagina is a powerhouse of elasticity that can stretch to accommodate a baby during birth. The tissue does loosen as the muscles relax to make way for the baby. However, the tissue usually shrinks back down to its pre-pregnancy state with time.

So, why do many women report changes to vaginal elasticity and sensation after birth?

In many cases, it’s because of damage to skin, tissue, and muscles.

The pelvic floor muscles are particularly prone to damage after giving birth multiple times or a difficult vaginal delivery. In addition to changes in sensation, pelvic floor issues can lead to a host of health problems in the future. The same goes for damage to connective tissue. Vaginal changes are common after giving birth.

Fortunately, vaginal tightening is available to address them. A Vaginoplasty can repair the pelvic floor and walls for a tightening effect. Meanwhile, a Perineoplasty can repair the muscular and connective tissue that supports the opening of the vagina.

Aging and Hormonal Changes

The most common cause for a loose vagina is aging. As a woman nears the end of her reproductive life, hormone production starts to wane. During perimenopause, the transitional phase before menopause, estrogen levels drop significantly. The decline directly impacts an otherwise tight vagina.

The vaginal lining can become dry, resulting in less tightness. During intercourse, the vagina will produce less natural lubrication as well. Overall, the tissue becomes less elastic as it loses resiliency.

Many of those changes are manageable with treatment, but some changes are expected as women approach menopause.

Deciding to undergo a labiaplasty procedure is a big step in gaining confidence and sexual empowerment. Labiaplasty is one of the fastest-growing cosmetics surgeries in Los Angeles because it can have a significant impact on the overall appearance of the vagina. All the while, it may address discomfort and improve your overall sexual health.

Labiaplasty surgery is highly personalized, catering to your needs and desires. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Every woman’s vagina is different, calling for different methods to achieve the desired result.

There are two primary surgical approaches available. These include trim and wedge techniques.

Trim Labiaplasty

Trim Labiaplasty

Trim labiaplasty is the most common of the two. It’s the method of choice when addressing a myriad of cosmetic concerns.

The trim procedure is relatively straightforward. Surgeons create a linear cut along the outer edge of the labia. It’s particularly effective at reducing the size of the labia minora. The process involves removing excess tissue to achieve a more petite look. Once healed, the labia minora becomes less prominent as it sits inside the natural folds of the labia majora

There are a couple of advantages to trim labiaplasty. The first is a drastic reduction in length and size. Trimming can instantly remove excess length, which addresses cosmetic issues and discomfort.

Secondly, the trim technique removes dark pigmentation on the tissue’s edge. Hyperpigmentation is quite common in this area. Removing it leaves healthy pink tissue on the labia’s edge, which is more desirable for most women.

Due to the nature of the incision, the clitoral hood is not affected. Surgeons can address clitoral hood tightening within the same procedure, but the trim technique alone will not achieve those results. This type of labiaplasty may also require more finesse around the tissue near the clitoris. If left untouched, the tissue may form an extra tab of skin that doesn’t follow the labia’s natural contours.

RELATED: What is Labial Hypertrophy?

Wedge Labiaplasty

Wedge Labiaplasty

Wedge labiaplasty is a little more complex. It serves similar purposes to the previous trim method. However, it achieves slightly different results.

As the name would imply, this method involves removing a wedge of tissue. Surgeons cut a v-shaped section of tissue from the center of the labia. This results in a triangular “keyhole” shape with two cut edges. Stitching the edges together tightens the entire labia.

The wedge technique can address asymmetry between the two sides and excess length in the central third of the labia.

Not only that, but it helps to achieve a smooth transition from the labia to the clitoral hood but does not treat excess clitoral hood skin. Unlike the trim technique, the wedge method does not alter the natural contours of the lips.

Now, because most of the edge is not touched, it does leave behind the hyperpigmentation that the trim technique removes. Surgeons may use other techniques to care for that concern, but it is not part of the standard wedge labiaplasty.

Which Labiaplasty Technique is Right for You?

The right surgical approach for you will depend entirely on your cosmetic, comfort, and vaginal health needs. Generally, trim labiaplasty is ideal for those who are prioritizing cosmetic issues like excess tissue and hyperpigmentation. Meanwhile, wedge labiaplasty is best for women who want natural tightening and minimal scarring.

Ultimately, your goals will dictate which procedure your surgeon utilizes.
